My work reimagines timeless motifs and classic New England charm for modern living.

THERE'S SOMETHING WONDERFUL IN THE WORKSYOUR DREAMS, MY PATTERNS.
There’s nothing more exciting to me than seeing my designs living in the real world! Art licensing is the foundation of Katie Lyn Designs, and I am thrilled to offer my artwork to help you realize your creative projects. I offer both exclusive and non-exclusive licenses of my patterns.
-
You receive a license that allows you to choose one of my pattern designs to be manufactured by the printer of your choice. Your licence enables you to sell finished goods in one product category (like a notebook, gift wrap, or dish towel.)
-
You hold the licensing rights for your product category, but the design may also be licensed non-exclusively to other companies for use on products in different categories. As long as the product categories do not overlap, the design may also remain published with my select print-on-demand providers (sites like Spoonflower) where customers can purchase fabric, wallpaper, and other finished products.
NON-EXCLUSIVE LICENSE
EXCLUSIVE LICENSE
-
You will receive a license granting you exclusive rights to a particular design for an agreed-upon use and period of time. For the duration of your license, the design will not be simultaneously licensed to any other creators for that use.
-
Usage terms for an exclusive license are negotiated and agreed upon by all parties before any design work begins.
As the designer, I retain the right to use the design during the licensing period for any other purpose not specified in the licensing agreement. For example, if you have exclusively licensed a design for gift wrapping, then I may also license the design within a different category such as women’s apparel or area rugs.
At the end of the licensing term, you will have the first opportunity to renew the design. If you decide not to re-license, then the rights to the design will revert back to me.

You’re in good company. I’ve been lucky enough to work as both an independent pattern designer and a creative product designer for in-house product development teams.
I understand how teams work to bring their ideas into production, and I use that knowledge to create workable patterns with broad market appeal. You can trust that the patterns you license are product-ready with quality vector artwork and on-trend color palettes.
IMMERSION CERTIFIED DESIGNERImmersion Certified Designers have successfully completed the full Surface Design Immersion Course and have passed both parts of the certification process: a comprehensive written exam and a professional project in Adobe Illustrator.
As a designer, the certification confirms that I have demonstrated proficiency in the three foundational areas of professional surface pattern design: technical expertise, industry knowledge, and market readiness.
LICENSING FAQs
-
An art license is when an artist (the licensor) grants permission to a manufacturer (the licensee) to use the artist’s original work on products in exchange for payment.
A manufacturer can be any company of any size, including large box retailers or independent sellers.
What’s important is that while the artist still retains copyright ownership of their work, they "rent" their artwork for a specific purpose and period that allows the manufacturer to produce a unique and beautiful end product.
-
Anyone whose creative vision aligns with mine! I’m open to working with brands of all sizes and my designs have been featured on products in local New England boutiques and national retailers like Wegmans, Bass Pro Shops, and Hobby Lobby.
-
I am open to working in most industries. My product development experience has been in stationery, home decor, and gift categories, but I am excited to hear new visions for how my designs can be used.
-
This is a valid, but complicated question! It depends on what kind of license—exclusive or non-exclusive, as well as the period and use of the design. For a clearer quote on your specific idea, please reach out directly, and I’d be happy to chat further.
-
Nope! Katie Lyn Designs will retain the copyright to all licensed designs. However, if you are interested in purchasing the copyright to an unlicensed design (meaning it is a brand new design I have not yet licensed anywhere) or you’d like to collaborate to have me create an original pattern specifically for your project, I’d be happy to consider. Email me with any questions!
-
Yes, absolutely! I am happy to offer complimentary adjustments to the pattern’s colorways and scale. We will discuss any changes you need before we finalize our contract together.
-
Yes, unless otherwise noted in the design name and contract. As a pattern designer, I specialize in developing repeating patterns.
However, I do occasionally create general surface illustrations or bounded patterns that do not repeat (designs that could be used as wall murals for example), but this structure will always be clearly noted.
-
Yes, I do—Pantone colors are the best! I am also able to work with hex code color requests if that’s easier for you.
-
Yes! Once a work is licensed, I can provide the layer files in Adobe Illustrator to ensure you can tailor the product design to your needs.
-
I’m happy to adjust the colorways and scale of any design to ensure it fits your end product. I do not offer full product development at this time, so to get the most out of your license, you will need to be knowledgeable in how to apply the vector artwork to your own context.
