HEY THERE, NEW FRIEND

I’M KATIE—A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST AND SURFACE DESIGNER. BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY, YOU CAN FIND PATTERN INSPIRATION IN THE WILDEST PLACES.

THE VIBE?

ORGANIC TEXTURES, EARTHY COLORS, AND WHATEVER LITTLE SURPRISE CATCHES MY EYE

You’ll find that my illustration style is playful, richly colored, and inspired by the organic shapes and earthy colors that can be found just outside your door.

As a lifelong New Englander, I love to incorporate local wildflowers, coastal landscapes, sea life, and forest imagery into my patterns. I enjoy blending different styles of painting and illustration within my collections and often experiment with hand-carved block printing.

I developed a strong foundation for commercial art while completing my B.F.A. in Art and Design: Illustration from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. After graduation, I spent seven years designing products for national home decor and gift retailers, soaking up as much industry know-how as I could.

I launched Katie Lyn Designs to share my unique perspective as an artist. Here, I blend my passion for pattern work with my other creative business: living air plant design and custom gifting.

If you see something that catches your eye (pattern or plant!) please reach out. I’d love to chat.

IMMERSION CERTIFIED DESIGNER

Immersion Certified Designers have successfully completed the full Surface Design Immersion Course and have passed both parts of the certification process: a comprehensive written exam and a professional project in Adobe Illustrator. As a designer, the certification confirms that I have demonstrated proficiency in the three foundational areas of professional surface pattern design: technical expertise, industry knowledge, and market readiness.

there’s just something magical about an idea that won’t let go until it’s made real

BEHIND THE SCENES

A PEEK INTO MY CREATIVE PROCESS:

1. rambling inspiration

I gather most of my inspiration outside my home on Cape Cod. I also love studying the history of patterns and often start my day leafing through old patternmaking books to find new ways to incorporate these rich traditions into my prints.

2. hand-drawn detail

Before they’re digitized, all of my patterns begin as hand-drawn sketches, hand-carved block stamps, or hand-painted gouache paintings. I do most of this artwork at my kitchen table, and I hope it brings an extra touch of relaxed comfort to my designs.

3. playful expression

I like to bring organic shapes—shells, leaves, flowers—into my patterns in playful ways that reveal something you wouldn’t have noticed before. Usually, this means shifting the scale or flipping the perspective you would normally take.

4. color magic

Colors are my favorite part of any project! In today’s world, when so much of what we buy feels impersonal, I believe there’s real magic in creating something that reflects someone’s energy and makes them feel seen.

5. precise pattern-making

I enjoy the technical side of pattern design almost as much as the artsy side. I’m always trying new mediums to deepen my artistic process, and I’m meticulous about how I digitize my work. I create high-quality vector files that capture the texture of my original marks.
